All About Waterpik – Water Flosser – Buying Guide and Review 2017

Have you heard about Waterpik and how it can help you get the best dental health possible when you include it in your daily routine?

“Well, I see that you regularly brush your teeth, but you still don’t floss good enough!” This is the sentence we had heard so many times from our dentist. But fortunately, soon we will no longer have to. We all know that flossing is not simple, it is extremely boring, and can be painful to our gums and to our fingers too. But, more often lately we hear that it is not as effective as we thought to maintain proper oral hygiene.

Waterpik Water Flosser Cordless

Most dentists also agree that string flossing is definitely going down in history. Although for the past few decades, dental floss was a leader in cleaning gaps between the teeth, the truth is that all this time we didn’t know of anything better. Also, recent clinical studies have demonstrated that the application of water flossers along with brushing teeth is up to 93% more effective in removing food residue and plaque compared to only brushing and flossing. Thus, more effective, easier and more fun alternative to dental floss is exactly Waterpik Water Flosser!

Why do we need an water flosser?

Water Flosser Waterpik

Every household should have one of these! Why? Because no toothbrush or dental floss can clean and wash all parts of the teeth and gums as these water flossers can. These are primarily the places between two teeth. And between the gums and the upper part of the tooth. Since the root of the tooth is mostly located in the jaw bone, and partly covered by the gums, just in that place between the gums and teeth food remains are gathering. It is very suitable for the growth of bacteria and the formation of gum disease. Such places can be cleaned no brush, no end, no interdental brush. After thorough brushing and flossing, there are still food remains around the teeth to be removed with Waterpik.

You can even use Waterpik for removing tonsil stones.

Water flossing is the joy of the entire teeth cleaning procedure!

Just imagine that instead of taking a good shower, you just wash your body with soap and sponge. And only using little water to rinse your hands at the end. That is what you do when you use only toothbrush and toothpaste, without good oral irrigation at the end.

Just shaking water in your mouth, no matter how good your “shaking technique” is, just isn’t strong enough to remove all impurities from the teeth, cheeks, tongue and palate. It is a swell feeling when you wholly clean your entire mouth in just couple of minutes. Waterpik is made to provide you the pleasure during teeth cleaning and a feeling of cleanness hours after.

Regular use of Waterpik not only improves the health of your gums and teeth, but also the complete oral health. Especially when mixing mouthwash with water in the tank – it’s fully disinfecting your whole mouth.

Several years of clinical studies have shown that the use of water jet technology eliminates up to 99.9% of plaque from one tooth surface in just 3 seconds treatment compared to dental floss. Also it is measured that Waterpik is 50% more effective in reducing inflammation and improving gum health. Other clinical studies have shown up to twice the efficiency of cleaning in people with implants, and even three times better results in removing plaque around the brackets in people with braces, compared to only cleaning with a brush and floss.

What is a Waterpik?

It’s a modern and most effective way of flossing! Water flosser is a “shower for teeth”. A machine that uses pressurized water which is “showering” the teeth and gums with pulses of spraying water to remove food particles from small spaces between teeth, removes plaque from all surfaces of the teeth and massages the gums. In short, oral shower cleans everything that brushes and dental floss can not.

Waterpik Water Flosser Reviews

Each water jet consists of three main parts:

1. water reservoir which size can vary on different models,

2. motor pump,

3. water flosser tips.

How does a Waterpik flosser work?

How Waterpik Works?

The principal of operation is simple enough. Each Waterpik water flosser has a pump which is powered by a wall plug, batteries or magnetic induction. Pump pushes the water  through the tip which comes out in the form of a stream under pressure. But, instead of it just being a continuous stream of water it it actually being sprayed out in pulses which enhances the cleaning even more. It is not difficult to learn how to use Waterpik.

How to floss with Waterpik?

This stream of pulsating water removes plaque, food particles and bacteria. And it does it in such a way which is more effective, more comfortable and easier than traditional string floss. The pulsating action also stimulates gum tissue for more health benefits.

The liquid put into the reservoir may not be just water. You can add pure hydrogen or your favorite mouthwash. But, read the manufacturer’s description or user guide for each specific model. An important rule is to make sure you put only a small amount of 3% hydrogen because it can damage the plastic tubing. Best is to use mouthwash considering that the amount of hydrogen in it is already much smaller than in pure hydrogen solution.

Waterpik Toothbrush

The important thing to note is that this appliance can not be a substitute for a manual toothbrush, but serves as it’s supplement! Also, you should continue to use interdental brushes if you have large spaces between your teeth. This is because it has been determined that the food and plaque still remain in these wide areas where even a strong stream of oral shower can not help. What is problem here is that these areas are too narrow for a manual toothbrush, but they do need some form of mechanical cleaning of residue in which interdental brushes excel.

Is Waterpik good for you?

Waterpik irrigates all surfaces of teeth and gums and oral mucosa of the mouth. This appliance is designed for home use, and there is a special model designed for use when traveling.

It is recommended for everyone! Considering that each Waterpik has several pressure settings it can be comfortably used by people with very sensitive teeth. For people who suffer from bleeding gums, gum disease or periodontal pockets, Waterpik flosser significantly improves oral hygiene. And thus greatly enables the healing of disease. For individuals who have healthy teeth and gums everyday flossing with water jet will help them to remain as healthy in the future.

Waterpik Water Flosser For Kids is a model that is specially designed for children at the age 6+ years. This is exactly the time when they begin to sprout permanent teeth that need to stay healthy. Here is Waterpik video on how to use Water Flosser for Kids. You can combine this with electric toothbrush for kids for best oral health care.

For those who have teeth very close to each other, Waterpik enables cleaning hard to reach surfaces in which not even the thinnest interdental brushes can enter. Anyone who has any prosthetic work such as metal-crowns, metal free crowns, bridges, implants, dentures or braces, if you want to extend the life of the prosthetic work and save money and retain healthy teeth, you have to acquire water flosser.

Because of the sensitive teeth and gum disease I decided to try it and I have not regretted it one bit. My dentist recommended it because it is much more effective than dental floss. Now everyone in my  family uses it.
Helen Jones
This is a great thing! It is like having your teeth cleaned completely in the dental office. Water pressure is really strong and it cleaned very well all gaps between my teeth. They are really thick. As I wear dentures, I often have problem with food stuck underneath. So, I started to use Waterpik and after first use I had a very good feeling in the mouth. I literally can feel how clean my teeth and dentures are now, compared to what I though were clean teeth before. It’s perfect!
Jason Anderson

How often should I use a Waterpik?

Dentists recommend the following timetable:

  • You should brush your teeth 2x a day for 2 minutes,
  • You should water floss once a day to clean between your teeth.

Models Available on the Market and Comparison Tables

Basically, all water flossers can be divided into 3 groups – Countertop, Cordless and Combo. Each type has several models. Some are older and less expensive, but still do the work well. And some are newer and have advanced features for removal of the plaque from the teeth and under the gums.

#1. Countertop Waterpiks have power plug in it’s base where a hand-friendly handle with tip starts. On top of the base is a large plastic container which acts as a water storage tank. These water flossers have the biggest water reservoirs and the largest number of pressure settings to individually customize flossing power. Pressure power usually can be selected in the increments of 2-10. Number of tips varies by model. Replacement tips and their model numbers are included in the following tables for all new and old models. You can bookmark this page for later reference (Ctrl + D is the keyboard shortcut). #2. Cordless Waterpiks look like a fat toothbrush. Their water tank located within the handle has less capacity than countertop models. On top of the hand grip is tip for the water jet to clean between the teeth or the content of the pockets, under bridges, around braces etc. Water flosser can be rechargeable or non-rechargeable with batteries. Most often they do not provide much control of the strength of the jet. They are especially suitable for carrying while traveling, and can also be used at home. You can buy Waterpik directly from the links in the table. Here are tables with new and older cordless Waterpik that exist on the market:

Buyers Guide – How to choose the best Water Flosser for you?

A large number of Waterpik models exist on the market and that can really confuse someone. You want to choose the best water jet based on your needs, but you are not sure how? How are you going to choose just the right one for you with all the features that you need?

No worries! We listed them all here in previous tables an compared all their features. And also rated 5 TOP Waterpiks on the Market. That will help you choose one that is best for you. We hope the following Waterpik reviews will be everything you need to make an informed purchasing decision.

Here are some of the questions that will guide you towards the right decision:

  • Do I need an water flossers for one, two or more adults? For families with many members, ideal water flossers are the ones with with large water storage capacity and greater number of tips. While smaller flossers are generally more practical for one or two persons. Of course, if you have chosen a flosser that does not have sufficient number of tips, you can always purchase extra because every family member should have his/her own. In the tables above you can find out which tips are compatible with each Waterpik model.
  • Which model is safe and effective for my children? Your children should also have the best possible care of their teeth. For kids older than 6+, Waterpik created a special model Waterpik Water Flosser For Kids that is designed for their gentle mouth. Children aged 12+ can share the same flosser with you (but they must have their own replacement tips).
  • Is it more convenient for me to water floss my teeth in the bathtub during shower or over the sink while I stand before the mirror? If you think that you won’t be able to control the water flow and that you will make a pond on your bathroom floor every time you use your Waterpik, then one of the waterproof cordless flossers should be your choice (like Waterpik Cordless Advanced or Waterpik Cordless Freedom). These flossers are also great for all those who have smaller bathrooms. But, if you prefer to directly check in the mirror if all you teeth are thoroughly clean, then you can narrow your choice to one of the countertop (Waterpik Aquarius) or combination (Waterpik Complete Care) water flossers.
  • Will I use it at home or mostly for travel? The manufacturer also had in mind  people who travel frequently. Waterpik Traveler is specifically designed water flossers to meet the needs for excellent dental cleaning, and at the same time, to occupy minimal space in the luggage. It has global voltage compatibility, which means that it can be used in any country in the world. Other Countertop and Combo water flossers can only be used in North America, so it’s best to buy them for home use. Accessories included in the box:

  • travel plug
  • 4 tips including: 1 plaque seeker, 2 classic tips, and one orthodontic
  • travel bag
  • storage case for tips

Like many consumers, we were also very impressed with the design of this portable water flosser. Word “Cool” has been tossed around a lot.

Price of the Cordless Advanced is a little higher than non-portable Waterpiks. It comes in 4 different colour variations: Blue, Black, White and Orchid. This variety of colors is not a standard for Waterpiks and the fact that manufacturer decided to enable it in this model shows their confidence in the product. The design of the handle has also a touch of chrome, giving it a modern and slick look.

Handle of this portable Waterpik has a curve which fits in the hand comfortably. Due to the bulk of weight being at the bottom of the handle it could take some time to get used to it completely.

Charging WP-560

Unique feature of Cordless Advanced is it’s charging system. Inductive magnetic charger will charge the WP-560 in 4 hours. Compared to other models this is two times faster as average charging time for similar models is about 8 hours.

There has been some reports of being able to fully charge this model as fast as only 2 two hours. However, we would advise caution here and charge this product according to manufacturer specifications to avoid any warranty issues and give it a best chance for the long product life.

Travelling with Cordless Advanced WP-560

Big selling point for WP-560 are travel-friendly features and accessories that it has. For people who are always on the move, especially for those frequent business trips, WP-560 has a lot to offer. Cordless Advanced deserves the name travel Waterpik.

WP-560 Cordless Advanced comes with the travel bag and also a travel plug. It’s power plug and voltage settings can be used anywhere in the world due to it’s support of the European voltage standards. There isn’t an abundance of travel-friendly water flossers on the market so WP-560 definitely fills a void here.

Nice thing also is that this Waterpik can be used under a shower without damaging it, which is very convenient when staying in different hotels.

Furthermore, it light weight of only 0.8 lbs (0.3 kg) ensures it will not add much to those precious baggage weight limits when travelling.

Performances

As with any product that is powered by batteries, there is always a question regarding weather product packs sufficient power to use it properly. With WP-560 Cordless Advanced this will not represent a problem. It’s powerful motor is doing a good job cleaning your teeth and removing food remnants and plague. Like with most of the other Waterpiks it will do a great service to your gums.

This model features only 3 power settings. As reported by many consumers, it works best by using middle and high power setting.

The water tank capacity is 210 ml or 7 ounces, which is enough for a 45 second flossing interval. Although this not as much capacity as other countertop Waterpiks with a power cable have, it is enough for thoroughly cleaning one jaw. And that would be our recommendation, use one water filling for upper jaw and second water filling for lower jaw. That way you will know that you gave them both an equal attention in cleaning.

If this is your first Waterpik water flosser, start with the lowest setting first and than adjust the power to your comfort.

Noise that WP-560 emits is relatively quiet compared to other models and that is a nice bonus for this more on the higher end water flosser.

Here is the video explaining how to use Cordless Advanced:

Final Thoughts

Waterpik Cordless Advanced WP-560 water flosser brings great portability features but at somewhat higher price than other models. But, if you do have a need to travel often, your oral health will be well protected by using WP-560. We don’t have any hesitation recommending this product and including it in our top 5 Waterpiks.

#5. Waterpik Cordless Freedom Water Flosser (WF-03)

Check Price

Our second pick in the cordless option category is WF-03, also known as Cordless Freedom. Besides leaving excellent impression on the customers, this Waterpik is also very affordable. For those looking something on the lower end financially but also expecting decent quality WF-03 seems to be a water flosser of choice. People with small bathroom space or frequent travelers will benefit with this water flosser.

Improved on the WP-300 model, WF-03 offers waterproof use, which is good for people who like to combine showering and brushing teeth together.

Key features and benefits:

Besides being affordable and portable, WF-03 offers the following:

  • 3 replacement tips,
  • 1 year warranty,
  • travel bag and
  • replaceable battery.

Check Price

Like with other portable water flossers you will have to fill up water tank twice during flossing. One charge is enough for one jaw. That is about 30 seconds of flossing.

Water jet that comes out of the tips is strong enough that it will probably cause a little bleeding for first time users. After a couple of uses the bleeding should stop as the gums become stronger.

Access to pockets in further away teeth is easy with this Waterpik and cleaning will be thorough enough to make areal difference.

Final Thoughts

Although on the lower end of price range for the Waterpik product selection WF-03 packs a good punch and has an added convenience of portability and water proof design. Lots of happy customers and excellent review marks make this model a worthy of serious consideration when making your best Waterpik purchasing decision.

How to clean a Waterpik flosser?

Cleaning your Waterpik is easy, and you will need only water, vinegar and your trusted dishwasher to do this job properly. Don’t loose pressure and effectiveness by skipping it! You should clean your water flosser every 2 to 3 months. And, this is how you maintain a peak performance of your water flosser.

First step:

How to Clean Your Waterpik?

Clean the water reservoir by putting it on a top rack of your favorite dishwasher. If your dishwasher supports air drying than use that setting.

Second step:

Clean all the internal parts by mixing 2-4 tablespoons of white vinegar with water (16 oz). Than fill the water tank with this solution and turn on the water flosser so half the solution is used. If you had purchased a countertop model of water flosser than just let the mixed solution drain through the handle. It should take about 20 minutes.

What has remained of the solution let it run through your water flosser. After that fill the water tank with warm water  and repeat the rinsing.

Third step:

Clean the handle after removing the tip by using the eject button. Handle can be safely put into the white vinegar solution for 5-7 minutes to dissolve residues. After soaking in vinegar rinse the handle with the warm water.

Fourth step:

You should clean the water flosser tip, after removing it with an eject button by soaking it in a hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar for 5-7 minutes. After that, rinse it with a warm water. Remember that it is recommended to replace the water flosser tips every 3-6 months.
